Yes well... I don't think something like that could be achieved with just anyone. Which is not to place blame on him, but from what little I understand of his background, he's been brainwashed before. More likely than not, his augment acted as a trigger for him.

It's a... systematic breakdown of someone's defenses through prolonged mental or physical stress in order to radically change their beliefs. It's often used by military or religious organizations.

Ahh. [She tries to think if there's a term for it in Thedas. Blood magic can accomplish something like it, though that's more along the lines of straight up mind control. But the concept is one she can understand.] He... must have been brainwashed quite badly.

[Beverly spreads her palms out on the table and stares at them for a long moment.]

I'm trying not to blame him. Rationally, I know it isn't his fault. But it's...

[Her hands shake. She folds them together to make it stop.]

[Riona is over at the table in a few strides, covering Beverly's hands with hers.]

Logic has very little sway when such strong emotions are involved. You saw your friend beaten to within an inch of her life. It's a natural way to react. What matters is what you do with those emotions.

[Beverly gives her a weak smile.]

You sound just like Deanna.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? [Her voice is lightly teasing, although she does wonder, since she has no idea who Deanna is.]

[Her smile brightens just a tad more.]

Deanna is one of my best friends, at home.

What is she like? [She hopes by prodding this subject along, it'll help take Bev's mind off of the Iskaulit incident.]

[Beverly knows this is a distraction and that is perfectly all right with her.]

Deanna is the most wonderful friend anyone could ever hope for: she's so good at meeting people where they are and understanding and accepting who they are, while never letting them settle for less than they can be. It always seems like she knows exactly what to say to bring things into focus when your mind is clouded.

[Her lips twitch with amusement.]

Funny too. Spot on in her impressions of people.

She does sound wonderful. [And quite the people person.] You think she'd be willing to come to Ferelden and work for the king? The court could use her. [She smiles a little, her tone teasing.]

I don't think our captain would willingly part with her. He depends on her counsel - as do we all.

Darn. What if we - the court bribed her with cheese? The best in Ferelden, from what I hear.

[She grins and laughs at the tease, also hoping it covers that slip of the tongue.]

[The slip up doesn't even register as such to Beverly - that Riona might be a member of the court doesn't seem like something to either hide or make a big deal of.]

Don't think cheese would be tempting enough. You'd have to offer her something more... chocolate.
